The full timeline

What lips actually do for 8 weeks.

Seven stages, in order. Most clients only need to read the stage they’re in.

Day 1

Bold, swollen, slightly sore

Up to 50% darker than the final result. Looks like you wore a saturated lipstick to bed.

Do

Blot lymph fluid every 30 minutes with damp gauze for the first 2 hours. Apply a thin layer of the ointment your artist gave you.

Avoid

Hot liquids, spicy food, talking too much, kissing, touching the lips.

Day 2–3

Peak darkness, mild tightness

Still much darker than the final colour. Edges may look crisper than they will heal.

Do

Drink through a straw. Eat soft, room-temperature food. Apply a rice-grain amount of healing balm 3–4 times a day.

Avoid

Sun, workouts that make you sweat, anything that pulls or stretches the lips (yawning, wide laughing).

Day 4–6

Peeling phase begins

Lips look chapped. Small flakes of pigmented skin will start to lift. This is the most-googled stage.

Do

Let the skin shed on its own. Continue light balming. Drink water aggressively — hydrated skin heals smoother.

Avoid

Picking, peeling, pulling. Even one pulled flake can leave a permanent patchy spot.

Day 7–10

The 'frost' — colour appears to vanish

Lips look pale and washed out. Most clients panic here. This is the most normal part of healing.

Do

Trust the process. Keep them moisturised. You are looking at fresh new skin over settled pigment.

Avoid

Booking an emergency touch-up. The colour is not gone — it is hidden under the new skin layer.

Day 11–21

The 'bloom' — colour returns

Pigment slowly reappears and softens into a natural, lived-in tint. Day 14 looks dramatically different from day 7.

Do

Start wearing lip balm as normal. Begin gentle daily sunscreen on the lips (SPF 30+).

Avoid

Lip exfoliants, AHA/BHA scrubs, retinol on the lips, lash and brow tinting near the mouth.

Day 22–42

Final settle

True final colour emerges. You will see exactly which areas held pigment and which need a top-up.

Do

Make notes about uneven spots, light areas, or asymmetry to discuss at your touch-up appointment.

Avoid

Drawing conclusions about whether the procedure 'worked' before week 6.

Week 6–8

Touch-up appointment

The included second session perfects the colour, evens any patchy areas, and locks the final result in.

Do

Show up rested. Bring any cold-sore medication. Repeat the same aftercare for 7–10 days.

Avoid

Skipping the touch-up. A single session is never the final result on lips.

Frequently asked

Lip blushing healing, answered.

How long does lip blushing take to heal?

Surface healing finishes in about 7 to 10 days. The pigment continues to settle and lighten beneath the surface for another 4 to 6 weeks. The full, final result is visible around 8 weeks, after the standard touch-up.

Will my lips look weird while healing?

Yes — and that is normal. Day 1 to 3 the colour looks much darker and more intense than the final result. Day 4 to 8 the lips peel and the colour appears almost gone. Day 9 to 28 the pigment 'comes back' as it settles into the dermis. Do not judge the result before week 6.

What should I avoid during lip blushing healing?

For the first two weeks: avoid spicy food, hot drinks (let coffee cool), kissing, makeup on the lips, swimming, saunas, intense workouts, and any sun exposure on the lips. Drink with a straw for the first 3 to 5 days.

Can I drink coffee after lip blushing?

Yes, but let it cool to lukewarm and drink it through a straw for the first 3 to 5 days. Hot liquids touching healing lips can cause uneven heal and pigment loss.

What if I had a cold sore after lip blushing?

Any oral tattoo can reactivate HSV-1 (cold sore virus), even if you have not had a cold sore in years. A responsible artist requires an antiviral prescription (Valtrex/Valacyclovir) starting two days before your appointment. If a cold sore breaks out during healing, contact your artist immediately — it can affect pigment retention.

When can I wear lipstick again after lip blushing?

Wait at least 14 days before applying any lipstick, lip gloss, or lip balm with active ingredients. After day 14, use clean lip products only. Avoid lip exfoliants and acids (AHA, BHA, retinol) on the lips for the first 30 days.

Why do my lips look uneven during healing?

Lips heal in patches — colour can look blotchy or asymmetrical between day 5 and day 21. This is the pigment settling, not a botched result. Most unevenness corrects itself, and anything remaining is the exact problem the touch-up at week 6 to 8 is designed to fix.
